SCORVAINE

Scorpion-Inspired Rocking Chair

Scorvaine is a rocking chair inspired by the fluid curve and balanced motion of a scorpion’s tail. The form wraps into a continuous arc that supports gentle rocking while offering a cushioned, cocoon-like seat. With its sculptural silhouette and natural movement, the chair explores how biomimicry can bring softness, rhythm, and character into furniture design.

Why the Scorpion?

The scorpion stood out to me for its strong visual personality. It looks fierce, yet its movements are controlled and graceful. Its body carries a sense of balance, tension, and protection that feels naturally sculptural. The grounded stance, the segmented form, and the way it holds and releases motion all create an expressive character. These attributes made the scorpion a compelling organism to study for a nature-driven form exploration.

Form Exploration

As the forms evolved, the motion of the scorpion began to transform into a place to rest - fluid, balanced, and quietly supportive

Ideation
scor.idea1.png

The chair’s rocking motion draws from the tail’s fluid arc, its structure from the segmented body, and its comforting enclosure from the protective claws.
