PROCESS
Background & Problem
The stationery market has evolved from purely functional objects to premium desk accessories that reflect identity and environment. However, traditional staplers remain uninspiring, with several core issues:
-
Poor visibility: users can’t see where the staple will land, causing misalignment or wasted sheets.
-
Unsuitable for booklet-making: desktop staplers are bulky, mini staplers lack reach or jam easily.
-
Low portability & no spare-staple storage: users often carry extra staples separately, which is inconvenient.
-
Cold, outdated aesthetics staplers feel like “office tools,” not personal desk objects.
There is clearly a gap for a stapler that is functional, precise, portable, and visually appealing.

Research Synthesis

User study revealed:
-
Most participants associate staplers with boring, corporate, or outdated aesthetics
-
Described as: “Office uncle vibe,” “machine-y,” and “something you hide in a drawer.”
-
Users can’t see where exactly the staple will land - leading to mistakes and paper wastage
-
Booklet-making is difficult due to limited reach and alignment issues and don’t need the big staplers
-
Most users prefer desktop staplers for stability and ease of use
-
Extra pins need to be carried separately, which is inconvenient and often forgotten
-
Students and designers said they prefer products that blend with their workspace vibe
-
People want tools that look nice enough to leave out, but still work efficiently

Existing Products

Desktop Staplers
Designed for high-volume office use, these models provide strength and reliability. However, their limited reach prevents mid-seam stapling, and their corporate visual language feels out of place in personal creative spaces.
Strengths
• Stable base
• Strong stapling force
Limitations
• Cannot staple booklets
• Visually heavy and outdated
Mini Portable Staplers
Small enough to carry, but often jam-prone with low staple capacity. Their short reach restricts functionality to quick fixes rather than actual workflows.
Strengths
• Portable and lightweight
• Affordable
Limitations
• Poor accuracy
• Inconsistent performance
• Limited storage and reach
Long-Arm Staplers
These enable center-fold binding, but are large, mechanical, and workspace-disruptive.
Rarely owned by students or designers due to cost, bulk, and single-use nature.
Strengths
• Center-fold capability
• Accurate positioning
Limitations
• Too big for everyday desks
• Not aesthetically considered
Opportunity

Middle Stapling
Enable center-fold stapling for effortless booklet-making
Precision & Visibility
Provide clear visual feedback to see exactly where pins will go
Integrated Pin Storage
A compartment for spare pins to improve portability
Aesthetic Appeal
Reimagine desktop stapler to be modern, sleek, and visually pleasing

Observation

Understanding the Mechanism
To design effectively, I studied the internal components and working of existing staplers through visual teardown and part analysis. This helped me understand functional details like spring tension, staple ejection, storage, and alignment - forming the base for our improvements.
